Education to Employment

Realising a Place-Based Approach to Education, Skills & Growth

The national challenges in skills have a strong local impact.

  • The UK productivity gap is the widest since 1991 (18% behind G7 average)
  • There is a growing sense of a divided Britain – 62 out of 65 social mobility coldspots voted ‘leave’ in the 2016 EU referendum.
  • There is a misalignment between employers needs and local skills, and the greatest future needs are in deficit areas – higher end technical and specialist skills.

‘Breaking the Glass Ceiling’ will examine how to best re-align the skills sector with employer needs using an integrated, place-based approach.

The project will examine three main areas of focus:

  • Local capability
  • Social mobility
  • Reforming the skills system

This report is the culmination of months of user engagement across two locations in the Kent and Medway footprint. It takes into account what prevention means from the top-down and the bottom-up. It provides the blueprint for how an entire county wide approach to prevention can be implemented through using this research as a case study.
