Turning The Tide
Addressing Health Inequalities in Coastal Towns through the lens of Employment
Building on BBI’s Clacton Place Programme, NHSE and Suffolk and North East Essex ICB have commissioned the Turning The Tide report on how to address health inequalities in coastal towns through the lens of employment.
In response to the findings of the CMO Report into Coastal Population Health (2021) NHS England (NHSE) alongside Suffolk and North East Essex (SNEE) ICB commissioned the Turning the Tide Programme. The focus of both reports has been significant health challenges faced by coastal communities.
These challenges are rooted in a decline in health outcomes over recent decades, exacerbated by a lack of focus on the wider determinants of health such as employment, housing transport and education. The Turning the Tide report aims to address these health inequalities by proposing practical steps for NHS Integrated Care Systems (ICS) to implement in coastal communities.
The report identified four priority areas for action:
- 51 coastal towns that have high deprivation and mixed density of employment – without concerted action to address employment and health, challenges will increase
- Data on economic inactivity and long-term unemployment by coastal towns – local trends for long-term unemployment will be higher by 20% in less than a decade without some systemic intervention
- Creation of inclusive employment pathway for targeting youth and major conditions
- Establishment of a Coastal Navigators Network of ICBs that can share best practice and deliver collective action
